Why do people use .gif instead of .(a)png when .apng has more color compatability and smaller file size?

In essence, why was .gif popularized much more than .apng besides the fact that it only came out around 20 years later ('87 vs '08); especially since it's a better form of animated image in two different but critical aspects size and color compatibility.

I did notice, though, that since (at least) Chrome OS v66 (for Chromebooks) the new animated default user profile icons are in .apng format; and they look really well made.

Just a shower question..
