What could possibly explain the fact that CSS lacks a way to style the whole "column" in a table?

You know when you move your mouse cursor over a table full of cells, and how the background for the row changes to make it easy to keep track of where you are horizontally?

Well, I always wish that there were such a vertical highlight as well.

There is no such feature in CSS, even though they have implemented a trillion much less needed things.

Instead, one has to use horrible JavaScript hacks (as with so many things over the years).

Why? What could possibly explain this?
