What are some principles from HCI and UX that work well in mobile game?

Take an example of an Action Strategy (RTS Genre) mobile game, already in market for more than 2 years(Elder Games).

  1. What are the key questions I could ask to the players(users) to understand their pain area and other issues? And How?

  2. What are some key discussion I should have with a game designers to understand the improvements the games needs in terms of improving UX.

And in general, what should I look for to improve UX in a Mobile Game.
