Shader Based Cross-Sectional Cut - Dynamically Controlled with Object

I have worked out how to map a colorramp across an object using shader nodes, and I can also set some of the color stops as transparent so that the object can have a sectional cut exposing the interior geometry.

My question is, how do control the position and orientation of this cut/section using an object such as an empty or a plane? That would be incredibly useful!

Also, I am aware that similar effects are attainable using a boolean operation but I really want to achieve this using a shader for maximum performance.
