Setting Up Google Search Console

Just a quick question, I read everywhere that I have to add 4 properties to Google's search console for one domain when using https://.

So I need to add these four:

http://www.example.com
https://www.example.com
http://example.com
https://example.com

A few questions about this:

  • Why do I need to do this, if all traffic ends at https://www.example.com and I only want the https://www. version to be shown in Google. Why not simply add the https://www. version only.
  • Do I need to add a sitemap.xml to all four properties? And can it be the same for all four?
  • Is there an easier way to do this and manage this. Now I have to do the same thing 4 times for every site I make, doesn't feel very logical. And the list of domains is becoming endless.
  • I can set a preferred domain but I can only choose if I want www or non-www, how can I set https as my preferred domain?
