Preserving figs

Last summer (Southern Hemisphere) I put up a few jars of whole green figs in a sweet syrup. The preparation involved pricking the figs with a fork and soaking them in a solution of baking soda. This season I have not been able to find that recipe, and none of the other ones I've tried have turned out nearly as well.

My Google-fu is generally pretty strong, but I can't find last year's recipe anywhere. Has anyone heard of such a recipe, or got an idea on how to find it?
