MyMaps in Google - Polygons prevent you from adding events underneath

I'm using My Maps - https://www.google.com/maps/d/ to plan a trip

I have a simple polygon to outlines an interesting region:

Polygon Layer

But it steals click events from being able to add things under the polygon, thus defeating the the premise of visually highlighting a region with a high density of interesting places I also want to flag.

Polygon Click

Any simple workarounds that combine the best of both worlds? I've tried moving the polygon to a different layer, but clicking on any region seems to (appropriately) highlight that region, which means nothing underneath it is available.
