How do I install Ubuntu on a USB drive that boots in UEFI?

I want to install Ubuntu on a USB stick so that I have it completely independent from my already small main drive, but I can't get the drive to boot.

I've followed questions and answers here, but most want Ubuntu on a USB stick so that they can take it to any machine, and that's not really what I'm trying to accomplish.

One of the answers seemed to be exactly what I wanted (this one), but I'm faced with a problem: I'm pretty sure the drive isn't installed to boot in UEFI mode.

I've tried installing it like in the answer I've mentioned, using a VM, and using a live boot from a GPT and UEFI booted drive, but both installed in the exact same way and I couldn't boot from the drive in any of the cases.

Is there something I can do to accomplish my objective?
